Powering Up

Floating Solar Cells, Kasai City
At a size of about eight football pitches, this is Europe’s largest floating solar farm. The 23,000-panel array was recently powered up at the Queen Elizabeth II reservoir outside of London as part of Thames Water’s ambitious bid to self-generate a third of its own energy by 2020.

The farm will generate about 5.8 million kilowatt hours of power in its first year.

While that’s enough to power 1,800 homes, the energy harvested here will be used by this water treatment works.

The low carbon, renewable energy produced by the floating solar generator will be used to help power Thames Water’s nearby water treatment works, which supplies water to customers. The innovative floating pontoon will cover around a tenth of the reservoir – enough to fill eight Wembley football pitches.
